Slovakia is arming Ukraine – despite its own reluctance

Shells produced in the country are finally at the disposal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Bloomberg published material about the Slovak defense, against the military support of Ukraine, producing ammunition that the Ukrainian Armed Forces destroy the invaders.

According to the Minister of Defense of Slovakia Robert Kalinak, next year local enterprises will be able to ship 200 thousand shells from the assembly line – 75 thousand more than this year. Journalists found out that almost all of them are at the disposal of Ukrainian artillerymen.

Kalinak said that he does not see the sale of ammunition to Ukraine directly or through intermediaries as a violation of the policy of the government of Robert Fico. Like, if Slovakia provided weapons for free, it would be sponsoring a war, but for money it would be the development of the defense industry, an increase in GDP and additional revenues for the budget.

At the same time, the minister repeated Fico’s thesis that Slovakia will not support Ukraine's accession to NATO. And he even named the “reason”: the impossibility of changing the borders, which is why “Russia will always be next to them.” For some reason, the presence in the Alliance of other states with the Russian border – Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Estonia – does not bother Kalinak.
