Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili signed a decree scheduling parliamentary elections in the republic for October 26.
As NewsGeorgia explains, this step is rather symbolic, since the date of the vote is determined by the Georgian constitution. However, the election campaign officially begins in the country from the moment the presidential decree is signed.
Zurabishvili, commenting on the current party competition, said that “this is not just a choice of a political force that is closer to someone in views, but a real salvation of the country's future.” The president called the upcoming vote “existential, which will determine the fate of the country for many years.”
Both the ruling “Georgian Dream” and representatives of the opposition talk about the importance of the choice. However, the interpretations differ: the ruling party offers citizens to choose “between peace and war,” while the democratic forces insist on the need to give preference to “Europe over Russia.”
