He explained that he was going to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, passed the VLK, TCK and SP, but did not receive approval from the General Staff, so he “received another offer.”
Zhytomyr Mayor Serhiy Sukhomlin resigned early. The corresponding decision was made at an extraordinary session of the Zhytomyr City Council.
This was reported by Ukrinform.
“This is a difficult decision that was made for several weeks. I can't say yet why it is being made. Next week I will be able to say more… I have repeatedly said in interviews and at elections that I do not want to remain the mayor forever, because sometimes you lose motivation, and you are definitely not the smartest in this city. It is important to do what no one has done before you,” Sukhomlin said.
In a comment to journalists, the mayor said that he was going to go to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, passed the VLK, TCK and SP, but did not receive consent from the General Staff, so he “received another offer.”
“When I went for this position, I wanted to work so that Zhytomyr would be the first. Today, Zhytomyr is the first to replace street lighting, the city was the first not to have electricity outages during a full-scale war. According to various ratings our city is the leader in terms of support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We were the first to introduce an electronic ticket. This is a very difficult job and there were mistakes, because they are with those who do it,” said Sukhomlin.
The city council deputies supported the early termination of the mayor's powers.
The mayor added that his family remains in Zhitomir.
Serhiy Sukhomlin was elected to the post of mayor in 2015.
