In 2024, Ukrainians began to pay child support more conscientiously due to the threat of losing their mobilization deferment. The increase compared to last year is 30%.
The head of the Central Department of the Ministry of Justice, Kirill Minenko, announced this on air during the telethon.
He noted that if a father has three minor children, he has the right to a deferment from mobilization, but on the condition that he supports them or pays alimony regularly.
“If the arrears in alimony exceed three months, then it is effectively considered that the father does not support his children properly, and in this case he can be exempted from a deferment from mobilization,” Minenko explained.
He added that such state mechanisms encourage Ukrainian citizens to pay child support more regularly.
- A new law on mobilization came into force in May. Among other things, it provides for additional sanctions for military-liable parents who do not pay child support. Currently, parents of three or more children have the right to a deferment from military service. However, for failure to pay child support for at least one child for more than three months, they will lose: the TCC will gain access to the debt database. The Ministry of Justice estimates this potential mobilization resource at 20 thousand people. Read more about this in the LB.ua article “Mobilization for non-payment of child support”.
- In January 2022, the Verkhovna Rada increased the minimum amount of child support to be collected for a child of other family members and relatives by at least 50% of the subsistence minimum for a child of the corresponding age. Now it is 1050 UAH (for children under 6 years old) and 1309 UAH (from 6 to 18 years old).
