The head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINR) Anton Drobovych said on the air of the telethon that he had asked the Cabinet of Ministers to allocate at least 1 million UAH for the search operations program, including in response to requests from Polish citizens, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“I asked the government to allocate at least UAH 1 million for a separate program. So that we have a separate program for search operations, in particular, if Polish citizens apply, we will try to help them,” said Drobovich.

He noted that for years the Polish side has been unable to launch either working groups or interdepartmental commissions, and Polish citizens are already “desperately turning directly to us.”

  • Recently, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed approval of the statement of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance on the possibility of resuming work on the search and exhumation of victims of the Volyn tragedy, which is a constant stumbling block in relations between the two neighboring states.
  • In early October, in Poland, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha discussed “specific technical, not political steps” to exhume the victims of the Volyn tragedy. He noted that there should be no political obstacles to this.
  • Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated the need to resolve historical contradictions between Ukraine and Poland for our country to move toward EU membership.
  • Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Ukraine should “resolve the Volyn issue in a spirit of gratitude.”
  • Chairman of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Andriy Sybiha stated that contentious issues of common history will be discussed.
