Deputy Minister of Education: Ukrainian teenagers' knowledge level is at least 2 years behind the required level

According to the official, this situation could hold back the economic and social progress of the entire country in the long term.

Deputy Minister of Education Nadezhda Kuzmicheva reported that the level of knowledge of Ukrainian teenagers is at least 2 years behind the required level.

She spoke about this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

“The consequences of educational losses that we see today are extremely serious. According to PISA-2022, the level of knowledge of Ukrainian teenagers is at least two years behind the required level, and this is an alarm signal for the entire society. Educational losses do not just affect the individual development of a child – they can, in the long term, hold back the economic and social progress of an entire country,” Kuzmicheva said.

Oksen Lesnoy: an additional UAH 270 billion is needed to raise salaries for all education workers.

She noted that due to forced relocations and missed schooling during the war, many children did not have the opportunity to gain sufficient knowledge and practical skills.

“This is not just a question of school grades. This is the development of soft skills and socialization skills, these are future professional opportunities, successes that may remain unrealized,” the deputy minister noted.

According to her, the World Bank predicts that due to educational losses, these students will lose billions of dollars in income over their lifetime.

300 thousand lost children

“This is a real threat to our human capital and the development of the entire country. We are now working on a strategy for returning children to in-person education – this is not just a targeted solution. This is our commitment to the future of the state, our chance to provide children with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence that are so important for their successful implementation in life and for a strong future for Ukraine,” said Kuzmicheva.
