Congressman Mike Turner, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, said the United States and NATO allies should allow Ukraine to respond to Russian attacks with allied weapons strikes deep inside Russian territory, and they should consider attacking “directly North Korean troops” if they are in Ukraine and fighting on Russia's side, Voice of America reports.

Turner, a Republican congressman from Ohio, believes that the Ukrainian military should be able to attack legitimate military targets in Russia with weapons supplied by the United States or NATO allies, or with its own weapons without restrictions.“The United States currently has a policy that Ukraine cannot use weapons provided to it by NATO countries and the United States to attack real military targets in Russia. So, for example, if Russia uses a military system to attack Ukraine from Russian territory, Ukraine cannot attack that system in response to U.S. weapons or local systems. That is a real military target that they should be able to respond to. The administration currently views that as a provocation. In fact, a first strike by Russia should be a provocation. They should be able to defend themselves,” Turner said.

He also stressed that the involvement of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine should be a red line for the United States and NATO, and the allies should not rule out attacking North Korean troops if they fight in Ukraine.

Russia should not “open the season” on unpunished strikes against Ukraine and invite foreign troops to do so, Turner said during a discussion organized by the Atlantic Council on Wednesday, October 30.

“I believe that the United States and NATO allies should seriously discuss and consider attacking directly North Korean forces if they are in Ukraine and attacking it. North Korean forces do not belong in Europe, they should not attack a European country. And I think it is in the interests of NATO and the interests of the United States as a NATO member that Asian, North Korean communist troops not march into a European country and attack it,” Turner said in a conversation with the head of the Atlantic Council, Frederick Kempe.

At the same time, Turner emphasized that a decision to attack North Korean troops should not necessarily be made, but, in his opinion, “an informed discussion about this topic needs to be held.”

“I think they need to discuss that North Korean troops should not be free from the fact that they are valid military targets of the United States and NATO,” Turner emphasized.
