Trump Appoints New US Defense Secretary

The Pentagon will be headed by a former military man who worked as a TV presenter.

Pete Hegseth

US President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense in his future administration.

According to Reuters, the Republican called his chosen Pentagon chief “a true champion of the idea that America first” and “someone who will keep America's enemies on guard.”

Hegseth served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 2021, he left the military amid controversy over allegations of extremism. He has been accused of intolerance toward minorities in the military, once expressing doubt that “we really want to see Biden's 'diverse' recruits with guns.”

In 2022, he called the war in Ukraine “less of a problem than what's happening on the streets of America.”
