Representatives of European countries and the United States at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro expressed dissatisfaction with the way the discussion of Ukraine was conducted at the instigation of Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

According to Reuters, the summit host broke with the tradition that a joint communique should be published on the last day of the event. Da Silva decided to end discussions on the war in Ukraine early and include vague wording in the final document that does not clearly identify Russia as the aggressor.

According to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, it follows that the hasty approval of the communiqué occurred when European leaders and US President Joe Biden were not in the room at all. They called da Silva's move “brutal”, but decided not to violate the order according to which the host country of the summit has broader powers than other G20 members.
