Austrian Court Again Refuses to Extradite Firtash to the US

The Ukrainian oligarch's extradition saga continues.

Dmytro Firtash

On Wednesday, December 4, the Vienna Regional Court announced a decision to ban the extradition of Ukrainian oligarch Dmytro Firtash to the United States.

< According to Vienna Online, the refusal to extradite the businessman, accused of corruption and bribery overseas, occurred back in November, but it was only now announced publicly. Until December 16, the Austrian prosecutor's office has the right to appeal the ruling.

This is not the first time that Austrian courts have sided with the Ukrainian oligarch. After his arrest in Vienna in 2014 and release on bail of 125 million euros, Firtash was at least twice on the verge of extradition, but each time he won the cases. The last such case was in June 2023.

In the United States, Firtash faces 50 years in prison and confiscation of all assets.
