Blinken dismisses 'Afghanistan factor' as reason for Russia's invasion of Ukraine

The Secretary of State does not see a connection between the withdrawal of the American army and the war.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken testified in Congress about the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the impact of this event on further geopolitical processes.

According to Ukrinform, the head of American diplomacy, when asked by one of the congressmen, denied the existence of a connection between the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to Blinken, The Kremlin, on the contrary, would like the Americans to remain in the Middle East as long as possible. The withdrawal of the contingent allowed Washington to respond faster and better to the spread of the war in 2022. The Secretary of State also recalled that Putin invaded Ukraine back in 2014, when the US army was in Afghanistan.

Blinken also rejected accusations that America showed itself weak after “fleeing” from the Taliban. According to the official, “the US and NATO are stronger now than ever before.”
