The European Commission confirms that Europe is ready to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine from January 1, 2025. At the same time, the EU does not comment on the visit of the Prime Minister of Slovakia Fico to Putin.

This was reported by a representative of the European Commission, Ukrinform writes. “The interruption of gas flows via Ukraine from 1 January is an expected event, and the EU is prepared for it,” the European Commission stressed.

The representative recalled that the European Commission, in coordination with Member States, has been working for over a year to prepare for a scenario in which there is no Russian gas flowing via Ukraine from 1 January 2025 and to ensure alternative gas supply routes for Member States that could be affected by such a cessation of transit.

“The European gas infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure the supply of non-Russian gas to Central and Eastern Europe via alternative routes. Since 2022, it has been significantly strengthened by new LNG (liquefied gas – ed.) import capacities,” the European Commission spokesman noted.
