Lithuania's top diplomat noted that this is possible only at the request of Ukraine.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said that if Kyiv invited the deployment of troops from some Western countries, including Lithuania, this issue would be discussed with allies, and the Lithuanian flag would be present there.
“We would discuss with allies and partners what this looks like, and we would discuss with Ukraine what this looks like. Let me remind you that after the Paris summit, when President Macron, who also invited the President of Lithuania, spoke about the initiative to expand its military presence in Ukraine in various forms, Lithuania did not rule out such a possibility,” the head of Lithuanian diplomacy said on the LRT television program “Tema Dnya” on Tuesday.
According to Budrys, Lithuania is a party that ensures security in the region: it contributes to ensuring security not only by diplomatic means, but also by other means.
“In the same way, now we need to talk about what it would be, how it would look, given a very clear, specific position, it will also be directed to the future US administration – Lithuania is also a party that ensures security in the region, and not just its recipient. (…) We actively contribute to ensuring security not only by diplomatic means, but also by other means. If such a question arises, I have no doubt that the Lithuanian flag will be there,” the minister emphasized.
In November 2024, Le Monde reported that European countries were again discussing sending troops to Ukraine. The discussions resumed before Trump took office as US President, which could stop aid to Kyiv.
