Trump administration considering holding elections in Ukraine

The US is discussing the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine, which could become part of the agreements on the cessation of hostilities. According to information published by Reuters, representatives of the Donald Trump administration have been actively discussing the possibility of returning to the electoral process in Ukraine in recent days, despite the current hostilities, writes IZ.

According to sources close to the White House, Washington is considering an option in which elections could become a key component of the preliminary agreements on peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow. US Special Representative Keith Kellogg said he believes it is appropriate to hold elections even during a war, as this is part of the democratic process that is typical of many countries.

The US administration is also analyzing whether it is worth insisting on a ceasefire first and only then promoting the idea of elections. According to US officials, the results of the vote could provide the newly elected leader of Ukraine with the opportunity to begin negotiations on long-term agreements with Russia. However, no official proposals have been made to Kyiv on this issue so far.

In Ukraine, such an initiative may be viewed ambiguously. According to sources in the Ukrainian government, no official requests or proposals regarding elections have been received from the US so far. It is also unclear how realistic this scenario can be in the current conditions, given the active phase of hostilities and legislative restrictions that do not allow for holding elections in wartime.

Recall that we previously wrote that European leaders insist on the active participation of the United States in future security guarantees for Ukraine
