As IZ reports with reference to Nutrients, Recent scientific studies have refuted the popular myth about the negative impact of potatoes on heart health. A group of researchers from leading American universities conducted a large-scale analysis of data on more than 110 thousand people to determine the real connection between potato consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The results showed that boiled, baked and mashed potatoes do not increase the risk of developing hypertension or other heart problems, even if included in the diet on a regular basis.
However, scientists have found one significant exception. This is fried potatoes, which, if consumed at least once a week, increases the likelihood of high blood pressure by 10%. The main reason for this effect is the large amount of fat and harmful compounds formed during frying. Eating fried potatoes more often can worsen the condition of blood vessels and increase the risk of developing heart pathologies.
During the study, scientists took into account not only the diet of the participants, but also their age, gender, level of physical activity and other factors. This allowed them to eliminate possible errors and establish that the total consumption of potatoes does not have a significant effect on the cardiovascular system. Previously, some scientific studies indicated a possible connection between potatoes and an increased risk of diabetes, but the product does not affect the level of hypertension or other cardiovascular risks if it is cooked correctly.
Regular consumption of boiled and baked potatoes without excessive addition of fats and salt can be safe for heart health. At the same time, fried versions of this dish should be avoided, as they can negatively affect the condition of blood vessels and increase blood pressure, which in the long term creates additional risks for the cardiovascular system.
