How the humanities help maintain self-development in the age of artificial intelligence

As IZ reports with reference to The Conversation, in the conditions of rapid development of technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, the issue of preserving humanitarian education is becoming particularly relevant. Modern students have access to unlimited information resources, but it is important to preserve the traditions of higher education, which help form not only a set of knowledge, but also the ability to independently understand and comprehend the world. Educational disciplines belonging to the humanities play a key role in developing the ability to think critically, which is the basis for personal self-development.

In the history of modern universities, one of the main tasks was to create conditions for the self-realization of the individual through education. With the establishment of university traditions during the Age of Enlightenment, the meaning of learning was redefined: universities were to become spaces for free development and self-education. Thinkers of the time, such as Wilhelm von Humboldt, argued that true learning should be based on the exchange of ideas between equals, and this should contribute to the development of the individuality of each student.

However, the rapid development of technology, in particular artificial intelligence, threatens traditional teaching methods. On the one hand, technology can greatly facilitate the process of obtaining information, on the other hand, it can lead to the loss of important skills of independent thinking and analysis. Scientists and educators note that instead of helping students develop critical thinking, AI can only serve as an external tool for quickly obtaining a result, without the need for deep understanding of the process.

Throughout history, the humanities have helped various social groups fight for equality and self-realization. Education has become an important tool for social change, in particular for women and black minorities, who demand equal access to knowledge. They realized that higher education institutions not only provide knowledge, but also allow them to realize their own capabilities and abilities, which is an important aspect of social justice.
