Church holiday March 8
In the church calendar, today is the day of the memory of Saint Theophylact, Bishop of Nicodemus. He was a famous monk who lived near the Black Sea. After the iconoclastic heresy was condemned at the Seventh Ecumenical Council in 787, Patriarch Tarasius convinced him to accept the episcopal priesthood. Theophylact actively helped the poor and sick, built shelters and hospitals, and personally cared for the sick during epidemics.
During the reign of Emperor Leo the Armenian, when the iconoclastic heresy regained strength, Theophylact openly defended the veneration of icons. For this he was exiled for 30 years, where he endured harsh conditions. He died of old age around 832.
