Church holiday March 11: Commemoration of Saint Sophronius

On March 11, Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem. Sophronius was born in 560 in Damascus, Byzantine Empire. He received a good education and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where he visited monasteries and holy places. In 580, Sophronius was tonsured a monk in Egypt, and in 634 he was elected Patriarch of Jerusalem.

During his patriarchate, Sophronius convened a Synod that condemned the Monothelite heresy. When the Muslims conquered the Levant, Sophronius led the defense of Jerusalem. He surrendered the city to the Caliph Umar, concluding a treaty that guaranteed freedom of religion for Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians. The saint died on March 11, 638, in Alexandria, leaving behind him the lives of the saints and other theological works.
