Barbara Woodward, the UK’s current permanent representative to the United Nations, has been named among the top candidates to lead the Secret Intelligence Service of the United Kingdom (MI6). According to British media, she could become the first woman to head this agency, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing The Times.

The leadership of MI6 has become a topic of discussion following the announcement of the end of the current chief Richard Moore’s term. A new appointment is expected soon, and among the top contenders is Barbara Woodward.

Despite having no direct experience in espionage, Woodward’s candidacy is actively being considered due to her extensive diplomatic background, including her role as the British ambassador to China from 2015 to 2020. Her deep understanding of international processes and knowledge of the Chinese language are seen as strategic advantages in light of current geopolitical challenges.

Woodward’s career began in 1994 when she joined the diplomatic service. Over the decades, she worked in key areas of foreign policy, including security, international relations, and representing the UK at the United Nations.

It is worth noting that MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service, is responsible for foreign intelligence and the protection of national interests abroad. Appointing a woman with no espionage experience to head this agency would be an unprecedented move in the history of British intelligence.
