Sony is working on a new portable gaming console that will feature cutting-edge hardware, including a custom-designed processor based on AMD architecture. Samsung is also involved in the project, handling prototype production at one of its manufacturing facilities in South Korea, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Jukanlosreve.

The device, currently known by its codename “Viita,” will incorporate a custom APU combining RDNA graphics with Zen 4 CPU cores. This combination promises significantly enhanced performance compared to Sony’s previous handheld devices.

The configuration reportedly includes LPDDR5 RAM support. According to data from South Korea’s import/export registry, the project’s responsible departments have already received sample processors. The documentation also references the circuit boards where these chips are mounted, suggesting that hardware testing is already underway.

Unofficial reports indicate that the console will be capable of running games locally, unlike the PlayStation Portal, which relies solely on game streaming. This functionality positions the new device as a potential competitor to existing handheld platforms such as the Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, and Lenovo Legion Go.

No official release date or additional technical specifications have been disclosed at this time.

Earlier we wrote that high prices for PlayStation 5 Pro have not affected console sales.
