Prolonged cold and wet weather in May created unfavorable conditions for the development of agricultural crops across Ukraine. Last month’s temperature regime was significantly below average, and in combination with excessive precipitation, it may hinder normal crop formation, reports the Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the Ukrhydrometeorological Center.
According to meteorologists, the average monthly temperature in Ukraine in May 2025 ranged from +12 to +17 °C, which is 1–1.5 °C below the norm. In the Carpathian region, temperatures dropped as low as +8 °C. Precipitation levels in most regions were considerable — ranging from 43 to 183 mm — in some places exceeding the climate norm by 1.5 to 2 times.
The unstable weather has had a noticeable impact particularly on grain crops. Due to a lack of warmth, wheat, barley, and other spring crops are lagging in growth. At the same time, excess soil moisture is limiting oxygen access to root systems, which may result in reduced yields. The decreased amount of sunlight is also affecting photosynthesis and delaying developmental phases.
According to forecasts from the Ukrhydrometeorological Center, weather conditions in June will play a decisive role in determining final harvest volumes. For now, farmers face risks related to uneven crop development, an increased threat of fungal diseases, and challenges in fieldwork operations.
Earlier we wrote that in Ukraine, losses of harvested vegetables and fruits can reach 60%.
