The government of the Netherlands has announced the discontinuation of temporary protection for third-country nationals who entered the country after fleeing Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. According to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), as of September 4, 2025, these individuals will no longer be entitled to temporary protection status and must leave the country within four weeks, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to IND.

According to IND data, this decision affects approximately 1,000 individuals. They will receive official notifications containing the necessary information next week. Exceptions include those who possess valid residence permits, are undergoing asylum procedures, or have applied for permanent residence before September 4.

Back in April 2025, Dutch authorities made a policy decision enabling the termination of protection for non-Ukrainian nationals who had resided in Ukraine, including students and labor migrants. Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, over 100,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the Netherlands. Officials had previously acknowledged the limited capacity for hosting displaced persons.
