Gaël Monfils, 39, becomes the oldest French player to win an ATP match by defeating Damir Dzumhur at Acapulco 2026, ending a seven-match losing streak.

French tennis player Gaël Monfils, husband of Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina, advanced to the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco by defeating Bosnian Damir Dzumhur with a score of 6:4, 7:6(5), reports Baltimore Chronicle. At 39 years old, Monfils set a record as the oldest French tennis player to win a match in an ATP event.

The match, held on February 25, 2026, at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco, Mexico, played on hard courts, featured a prize fund of $2,469,450. This was the fifth career meeting between Monfils and Dzumhur, with the Frenchman securing his fourth victory over the Bosnian player.

Monfils’ win marked his first ATP match victory since Wimbledon 2025, ending a seven-match losing streak. In the next round, he is scheduled to face Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, ranked 27th. The Frenchman displayed consistent baseline play and strong serve performance, particularly in the decisive tie-break of the second set, where he maintained composure to close the match without dropping a set.

The tournament continues to attract top-ranked players from around the world, with the hard-court event in Acapulco being a key stop in the ATP 500 series. Monfils’ achievement highlights both his longevity in professional tennis and the depth of experience he brings to high-level competition.
