On the resort in Canada where the G7 summit will soon officially open, an informal conversation took place among several key world leaders, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing Sky TG24.

The meeting involved Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. The gathering had a relaxed tone — the leaders exchanged greetings and started with a few jokes.

According to media reports, however, this informal talk laid the groundwork for preliminary consultations that will form the basis of official G7 decisions. Notably, Italian sources indicated that the primary goal of these discussions was to develop a unified European stance regarding the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran. This would then allow for coordinated actions with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, declared before the summit the need to increase pressure on Russia to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. She called on the G7 countries to intensify sanctions policies to achieve this goal.

Despite the European Union’s intentions to adopt a new sanctions package, so far attempts to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to join these measures have been unsuccessful. The American leader does not wish to apply additional pressure on Vladimir Putin, explaining his stance by the risk of complicating peace negotiations.
