The U.S. House of Representatives rejected the initiative to impeach Donald Trump over airstrikes on Iran conducted without congressional authorization, reports the Baltimore Chronicle with reference to The Hill.
The initiative was proposed by Texas Democrat Al Green, who called for holding the former president accountable for failing to obtain congressional approval before ordering strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
The House voted down the proposal by a wide margin. Out of 423 representatives, 344 voted against, including 128 Democrats and all Republicans. Only 79 Democrats supported the measure.
Al Green has repeatedly pushed for Trump’s impeachment, criticizing his approach to both domestic and foreign policy. In this latest attempt, he accused the 45th U.S. president of violating his oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution” and of abusing his powers.
Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, responded to the accusations by defending Trump’s actions, asserting that they were entirely within his authority as Commander-in-Chief under Article II of the U.S. Constitution.
“Strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities clearly fell within President Trump’s Article II powers as Commander-in-Chief. This shouldn’t even be a subject of debate,” Johnson emphasized.
