During four-hour closed-door talks with the European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that a Russian defeat in the war against Ukraine is unacceptable for Beijing, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing South China Morning Post.
According to sources familiar with the course of the meeting, Wang Yi explained this stance by expressing concern that if Moscow were to lose, the United States would then focus its full strategic attention on China. The statement effectively confirmed what many in Brussels consider to be China’s actual position, despite Beijing’s official insistence that it is “not a party to this conflict.”
During the tense four-hour discussion, Wang Yi reportedly gave Kallas multiple “history lectures.” Sources said that he firmly rejected any accusations of financial or military support for Russia. He emphasized that if China were truly helping Moscow, “the war would have ended long ago.”
Wang Yi’s remarks came amid increasing scrutiny from Western partners over China’s role in global security matters, particularly in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
