Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that Ukraine is destined to win its war for independence, as nothing can suppress the nation’s desire to be free. He shared this view in a column for Daily Mail, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the Daily Mail.
Johnson urges readers to talk to Ukrainian defenders to truly understand their resilience and determination. Over the past three years, he has met hundreds of such fighters—both men and women—whose severe injuries seem minor compared to the strength shining in their eyes.
In London, he recently met with a group of Ukrainian Armed Forces veterans, many of whom fought during the siege of Azovstal in Mariupol in the first half of 2022. These soldiers endured relentless bombings and captivity, where many were brutally tortured. As he often does, Johnson asked them whether all the suffering and pain had been worth it. The answer came with passion and clarity: yes, it was worth it—a thousand times over—for Ukraine to be free.
Addressing the broader conflict, Johnson acknowledged that Russia may theoretically enjoy a numerical advantage, though he believes this is often overstated. He pointed out that Vladimir Putin is waging war in blatant disregard of international law, carrying out atrocities on an industrial scale and targeting civilian infrastructure that Ukraine currently struggles to defend effectively.
Nevertheless, Johnson insists that time is now working against Russia’s “shameful and failed invasion,” which, he says, is doomed—whether this year or next. He attributes this growing certainty not only to Ukrainian courage and ingenuity but also to a renewed sense of unity among Western allies.
Following a difficult period marked by the February meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, Ukrainian heroes are once again daring to dream of victory.
