The Central American country of Nicaragua, led by President Daniel Ortega, officially recognizes the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia. The statement was made in an open letter Ortega sent to his “brother and comrade” Vladimir Putin, reports Baltimore Chronicle, citing El 19.

In the letter, which was also signed by Ortega’s wife and co-president Rosario Murillo, the Nicaraguan leaders confirm the recognition of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions as an “inseparable part” of the Russian Federation. The statement goes on to say that these territories are now considered a permanent part of Russia.

Moreover, the Nicaraguan authorities refer to the war waged by Russia in Ukraine as a “military operation” aimed at “protecting the life of their people, safeguarding Russia’s legitimate territories, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.” This stance reflects Nicaragua’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

President Ortega has repeatedly demonstrated his backing of Russian policies. He has voiced support for closer ties with Russia since his previous term in office, and Nicaragua was one of the first countries to recognize Russia’s occupation of Crimea.
