Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the issue of ending the war should be resolved at the level of national leaders. However, he believes that Russia is doing everything possible to prevent such negotiations. He made this statement during a briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who visited Kyiv, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
Zelensky called his visit to Washington on August 18 “historically important.” During this visit, the formats of potential meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin were discussed, both bilateral and trilateral. The Ukrainian president emphasized that it is only at the level of leaders that questions about ending the conflict can be resolved, but, as he pointed out, Russia is trying to avoid such meetings.
“Ukraine is not afraid of any negotiations. We are ready to work productively,” Zelensky stressed. He also clarified that Ukraine does not have direct agreements with Russia at the moment but is ready to support bilateral talks if necessary. However, Zelensky expressed a preference for a trilateral format that would involve the United States.
“We already made agreements with President Trump. He is the only person who can stop Putin today. We agreed that we need to move towards diplomacy, and I supported this direction,” the Ukrainian president said, adding that if Moscow refuses diplomacy, new sanctions will be imposed.
