The world is currently facing heightened danger, but a full-scale global conflict is not expected, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated in an interview with LéNA, reports Baltimore Chronicle with a reference to the source. She emphasized that she is doing everything possible to preserve peace and freedom in Europe, which is why the EU is actively strengthening its defense capabilities.

Von der Leyen explained that in view of increasing global hostility, Europe must take all necessary measures to ensure democracy, prosperity, and security. She stressed the importance of demonstrating to allies and potential adversaries the EU’s capacity for defense.

According to her, the bloc has been on the right track in strengthening its energy security and defense readiness since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Commenting on the recent incident in which the U.S. Army did not participate in NATO’s response to Russian drone attacks in Poland, von der Leyen noted that such events highlight the need to strengthen European autonomy in security matters.

To achieve this, the EU is implementing the “Readiness for 2030” program, which involves mobilizing up to 800 billion euros for defense needs, aiming to make Europe more independent and capable of autonomous security responses.
