Kirill Dmitriev told CNN that the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia are close to a diplomatic end to the war as he arrives in Washington for key talks with officials.

Russian financier and negotiator Kirill Dmitriev stated that the United States, Ukraine, and Russia are approaching a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war. He made this comment in an interview with CNN shortly after arriving in Washington for meetings with American officials, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to CNN.

According to Dmitriev, who serves as the economic envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the Kremlin leader is expected to take place, although it may be postponed to a later date. Trump previously explained that the planned Budapest meeting was delayed due to the lack of progress in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Dmitriev emphasized that the parties are “quite close to a diplomatic solution,” suggesting that meaningful discussions could soon yield tangible results. He noted that the gradual convergence of positions between Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow signals a potential path toward peace.

During the conversation, the journalist reminded Dmitriev that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had agreed to freeze the current front line as a step toward a ceasefire and asked why Putin had not reciprocated. The Russian envoy responded that Moscow seeks not merely a temporary truce but a “final resolution” to end the war.

“This is a major step by President Zelensky — recognizing the issue of front lines. His earlier stance demanded a full Russian withdrawal, so now I believe we are indeed getting close to a diplomatic outcome that could be formalized,” Dmitriev said.

While in Washington, the Kremlin representative is expected to hold talks with members of Donald Trump’s administration to further discuss U.S.–Russia relations. In particular, Axios reported that Dmitriev plans to meet with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.

The visit comes amid growing U.S. frustration with Moscow’s actions. Only days earlier, President Trump announced new sanctions against Russia’s two largest oil companies — Rosneft and Lukoil.
