Former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has officially announced that she will not seek re-election to Congress after the conclusion of her current term in January 2027. At 85 years old, Pelosi is bringing to a close a political career spanning more than three decades, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the statement released by Nancy Pelosi and covered by BBC and CNN.
Nancy Pelosi made history as the first woman to lead the House of Representatives, becoming a central figure in the Democratic Party in Congress. She held the Speaker position from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. For over twenty years, Pelosi led House Democrats and continued representing San Francisco, her constituency since she was first elected in 1987 at the age of 47.
In a video message released on November 6, Pelosi expressed gratitude to her constituents and emphasized the importance of unity and progress: “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative. My message to the city I love is simple: San Francisco, know your power. We made history. We achieved progress.”
Throughout her career, Pelosi has been one of the most influential figures in American politics, participating in critical national political decisions. During Donald Trump’s presidency, she openly challenged his policies, and in 2020, she publicly tore up the text of his address to Congress. Pelosi also led two impeachment proceedings against Trump in 2019 and 2021.
It is important to note that the Speaker of the House is the third-ranking official in the U.S. political hierarchy, following the President and Vice President. As highlighted by BBC, Nancy Pelosi played a decisive role in advancing or blocking the policy agendas of several U.S. presidents, shaping the political course of the nation for decades.
