UK evaluates sending troops, ships, and aircraft to Greenland to bolster Arctic security amid Trump’s statements on the island’s strategic importance.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, is reportedly in discussions with European allies regarding a potential deployment of British military forces to Greenland to strengthen regional security, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Telegraph .

According to information obtained by the publication, these plans, which remain in the preliminary phase, could involve sending British soldiers, naval vessels, and aircraft to safeguard Greenland against potential threats from Russia and China. Recent meetings between British officials and their counterparts in Germany and France have been held to begin preparations for such operations.

European governments are anticipating that a significant increase in their presence in the Arctic could influence former US President Donald Trump to abandon his ambitions of annexing the strategically important island. Sources suggest that Trump could frame any European-led efforts as a victory for American taxpayers, highlighting that Europe is covering much of the cost for Atlantic patrols.

Officials within the UK government have indicated that Starmer takes the security threats posed by Russia and China in the Arctic “extremely seriously” and agrees on the need for proactive measures. One source told the publication, “We share President Trump’s assessment that rising Russian aggression in the Far North must be contained, and Euro-Atlantic security reinforced… The United Kingdom will continue working with allies on operations serving our national interests to protect people.”

The report states that NATO members have tasked the European NATO command with assessing additional measures for Arctic security. Options could include full-scale troop deployments or a combination of time-limited exercises, intelligence sharing, capability development, and reallocation of defense expenditures.

Any prospective operation is expected to be conducted under NATO’s banner and remain separate from existing missions in the Baltic region and Poland. UK officials noted that their armed forces are preparing to take on a larger role in ensuring Arctic security.

This consideration follows recent statements by Donald Trump after a military operation in Venezuela, reiterating that the United States should have control over Greenland to prevent the island from falling under Russian or Chinese influence. In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged Trump to “cease threats,” while European leaders emphasized that only Greenland’s residents and Copenhagen can determine the island’s future. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland.
