Even without Putin and the occupied territories: the Latvian Foreign Ministry is convinced that the threat from the Russian Federation will persist

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Krisjanis Karins, is convinced that the Russian Federation will pose a threat to the West, even if there is a change of power in the Kremlin and Ukraine de-occupies its territories. The diplomat called on NATO to develop a long-term strategy to contain an aggressive country.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry said that the Russian Federation has an imperialist ideology, therefore neither the coming of a new president to power nor defeat in the war in Ukraine, will not change the country’s aggressive intentions, NBN reports.

According to the diplomat, the Russian Federation will not stop, it can only be stopped. Karins explained that as soon as the war in Ukraine ends, Kyiv will regain control over the occupied territories, Moscow will begin to restore its military potential and will look for new targets for aggression, posing a threat to all of Europe.

The Minister emphasized that the countries NATO must develop a long-term strategy to contain the Russians and increase the potential of its defense industry.

Earlier, the head of the Czech Foreign Ministry called on Europe to strengthen assistance to Ukraine so that Russian troops do not end up on the EU borders.
