ISW analysts revealed the real goals of intensifying the Russian offensive in the Kharkov region

On the morning of May 10, Russian armored groups tried to break through the defense bridgehead of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Volchansk region (Kharkiv region), however, despite the repulsion of this attack by Ukrainian artillery, fierce fighting in this sector of the front still does not stop (near Strelechye, Krasny, Dustny and Borisovka).

About the offensive of Putin's army in the border area of the Kharkov region , apparently, is pursuing a strategy of involving and keeping the Defense Forces in this direction, writes NBN, citing the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

It is assumed that the Russian occupation army seems to be carrying out only the preliminary stage of an offensive operation in the northern part of the Kharkov region – these intentions of the Russian Federation indicate a limited operational plan, but aimed at achieving a strategic result – diverting Ukrainian units and armored vehicles from other critical sectors of the front in eastern Ukraine.

ISW analysts note — the Russian Federation may take advantage of the tactical bridgehead in the northern regions of the Kharkov region in over the coming days to further intensify offensive operations, and will try push the Ukrainian Armed Forces back from the border with the Belgorod region and advance so that the artillery can “reach” Kharkov.

However, the current efforts of Putin’s troops do not actually indicate that the occupiers are carrying out a large-scale offensive to encircle or capture Kharkov.

We previously wrote that ISW explained the increase in Russian ground attacks in eastern Ukraine over the last month.
