As reported by NBN with reference to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to take advantage of the situation to launch an offensive in the Kursk region, despite the fact that the Russian command knew about such plans and was preparing to repel the invasion, but did not take appropriate measures to minimize the threat.
As analysts at the Institute for the Study of War have learned, in June, units of the “second army of the world” deployed along the border with Ukraine were staffed only by 60-70 percent, mainly by untrained reservists.
Thus, the Russian leadership did not make “any significant efforts” to increase the combat readiness of military units serving in the border areas of Kursk region, and also strengthened the fortification line along the border by the time the Ukrainian Armed Forces began their operation. That is, the Russian authorities simply ignored a number of relevant requests, miscalculating the potential of the Defense Forces to advance deep into Russian territory.
ISW summarized, pointing to the unusual tactics of the Ukrainian Defense Forces:
Ukrainian troops were able to take advantage of the uncertainty regarding their intentions and capabilities to ensure operational surprise.
Also, the Ukrainian Armed Forces experimented with an innovative method that combines ground operations with the support of unmanned systems, but ISW did not want to cover it in more detail in order to “maintain the operational security of Ukraine.”
