Le Monde reported that a number of Western countries have once again begun to discuss the potential deployment of their regular army units or private military companies (PMCs) to defend Ukraine.
As reported by NBN with reference to Radio Liberty material, Lithuanian Ambassador to NATO Deividas Matulionis made a statement: Vilnius supports Paris’s idea regarding the possible “secondment” of troops to the territory of Ukraine, and if France decides to carry out such an “operation”, then it will be possible to do so without the permission of all member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Based on Matulionis’ opinion, the transfer of troops to Ukraine can only be a national decision or similar actions by a group of states/coalition wishing to join this initiative, and, “it is not necessary to have NATO’s approval or label here.”
At the same time, for now the redeployment of foreign contingent to Ukraine is “just an idea”, and leaders of different countries have formed ambiguous positions on this matter, which are not similar to the French proposal.
Matulionis believes that the above-described topic may be raised by NATO foreign ministers at the Brussels meeting scheduled for next week:
The process of training troops depends primarily on them, and perhaps some countries will join sooner or later.
Earlier, we wrote that Merkel claimed that Ukraine's path to NATO in 2008 would have provoked the Russian Federation to invade.
