The number of cases opened for unauthorized abandonment of a unit (AWOL) in 2024 has increased significantly — the figure reached 35,307 people (according to some sources, more than 100,000).

As reported by NBN, citing LIGA.NET sources in the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the course of this month, 6,000 defenders who had previously left their units without permission have voluntarily returned to military service.
As it became known, the above-described “volunteers” will be enrolled in reserve battalions, and only later will they be sent to “certain”, apparently “penal” units to continue their service.
At the same time, a source from the General Staff confirmed that the generals are carefully monitoring the said dubious process, and if a mass outflow of personnel from the unit, an inspection will be carried out in it, and if negligent performance of duties by the unit's command is confirmed, disciplinary action against officers is guaranteed.
