On Wednesday, December 25, Pope Francis, speaking from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to thousands of believers, mentioned the Russian-Ukrainian war. In his Christmas address Urbi et Orbi, the Pontiff called on both countries to negotiate peace.

In his message, the head of the Catholic Church also called on Kyiv and Moscow to make “gestures of dialogue and meeting” in order to achieve a lasting and just peace, the NBN publication reports, citing Reuters.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that Francis has spoken about negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian sides. In March 2024, the Pontiff, in an interview with the RSI television and radio company, scandalized himself by calling on the Ukrainian leadership to “raise the white flag” and “not drive the country to suicide.”

Later that month, after the feast of St. Joseph, the head of the Catholic Church again spoke about the negotiation process between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Francis also mentioned Israel's war against the terrorist group Hamas.
