ISW assesses threat of front breakthrough due to US refusal to continue military aid to Ukraine

The Institute for the Study of War stated that the Russian Armed Forces will try to take advantage of the pause in American aid to Ukraine to step up progress on the front.

The ISW analytical material notes that the United States supplied the Ukrainian Defense Forces with Patriot air defense missile systems, ATACMS missile systems, HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, towed howitzers, armored vehicles, and artillery shells. American experts write that most of these weapons are complex systems that only the United States can provide, the NBN publication reports.

The suspension of American aid will hurt the Ukrainian military's fighting capabilities, analysts say, but it will take weeks and months before Washington's lack of support begins to have an impact on the front.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to Western officials, will be able to maintain the current pace of fighting until about June of this year if Ukraine continues to receive aid from the United States under contracts concluded by the Biden administration. Kyiv has received about 90% of the weapons provided by the White House through previous packages, with the remaining 10% due to arrive by August.

The Institute for the Study of War notes that the Defence Forces will continue to fight using domestically produced resources and assistance from European countries. The lack of US assistance will have a negative impact on the defenders' ability to carry out attacks at the current pace, but a breakthrough of the front will not occur in the coming months.

Earlier, retired General Ben Hodges explained why America will regret “abandoning” Ukraine.
