On Tuesday, March 18, the head of the White House and the Kremlin dictator are scheduled to hold a telephone conversation. The American publication The Wall Street Journal assessed the chances of a ceasefire in Ukraine after the talks between Trump and Putin.
The article notes that the US President hopes to receive Moscow's consent for a 30-day truce, but the Kremlin has dashed hopes for a ceasefire, NBN writes.
On March 17, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko once again stated that Russia considers talk of deploying any foreign peacekeeping forces in Ukraine to be “inappropriate and absurd.” At the same time, sending such a contingent is a key point of the peace agreement for Kyiv and its allies.
Others in Moscow called for addressing the “root causes” of the war, hinting that Russia intends to retain control over the occupied territories and exert political influence over the rest of Ukraine.
The media outlet notes that the Kremlin shows no signs of abandoning its military goals in Ukraine, so the American president's phone call with the Russian leader will most likely end with “diplomatic pleasantries” and a promise of further negotiations.
Let us recall that the day before, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on Trump not to make concessions to Putin that could harm Ukraine.
