George Simion, the leader of Romania’s far-right political party “Alliance for the Union of Romanians” (AUR), who won the most votes in the first round of the presidential election, has called for Ukraine to compensate Romania for the support it has provided in the context of the war, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Digi24.

The politician, who garnered over 40% of the votes, stated that if elected president, he would focus on Romania’s internal issues rather than supporting external conflicts. Simion clearly expressed his stance as neutrality, distancing himself from both the supply of weapons and active involvement in supporting Ukraine. He emphasized that Romania’s policy should align with that of Donald Trump, which, according to him, aims to avoid escalation.

The AUR leader stressed that Ukraine should respect the Romanian community living within its borders and compensate Romania for its involvement in military initiatives. He believes the form of this compensation could be subject to separate negotiations.

Simion specifically mentioned the Patriot missile defense system transferred to Ukraine, which he considers an act of national treason. He argued that for the expenses borne by the Romanian people, the state should receive an adequate return.

The first round of the presidential elections in Romania took place on May 4. Simion leads with 40.94% of the vote, significantly ahead of the current mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, who received 20.99%.
