During a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at the Ramstein Air Base, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a new military support package for Ukraine valued at approximately 5 billion euros. The aid includes the delivery of 10,000 artillery shells from Bundeswehr stockpiles, as well as the procurement of an additional 100,000 shells, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Bundesministerium der Verteidigung.
In addition, Germany will finance the acquisition of 180,000 rounds of ammunition through the Czech initiative.
The package also comprises 100 armored infantry vehicles, 100 transport vehicles, spare parts for previously delivered weapons systems, and medical equipment.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Germany has provided military assistance totaling about 5.2 billion euros, which includes both supplies from Bundeswehr reserves and procurement financing from the defense industry.
Alongside material support, Germany plays an active role in training Ukrainian military personnel. Over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained in Germany, and another 10,000 are expected to undergo training during 2024.
Germany also leads several “capability coalitions” designed to strengthen Ukraine’s defense. Together with France, it coordinates the coalition for integrated air and missile defense, and jointly with Poland, it co-leads the “tank coalition.”
These initiatives aim to coordinate international efforts to provide Ukraine with the military capabilities it needs to defend itself against Russian aggression.
