Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Ukraine should not join the European Union, calling it a “dangerous country.” He made this declaration during his speech at the Qatar Economic Forum, where he also emphasized that, unlike other candidate countries, Ukraine is currently at war, has weak economic indicators, and suffers from a corrupt system. Orbán believes that Ukraine’s membership in the EU would pose significant risks to the Union’s security, economy, and political stability, reports Baltimore Chronicle via Kossuth.

The Hungarian head of government stressed that the EU’s expansion should be approached cautiously, especially when it involves a country in an active military conflict. According to him, such conditions significantly complicate adaptation to European norms, turning the integration process into a risky political experiment.

Orbán also pointed out that Ukraine receives substantial financial support from the EU, yet, in his opinion, these resources are used inefficiently. He warned that granting membership to a country whose financial system is critically dependent on external aid could have negative consequences for the entire EU budget.

Additionally, the prime minister noted that Ukraine’s relations with several EU member states, particularly Hungary, remain tense. In his view, this is another strong argument against its accession. He called on European leaders to take a balanced approach to the enlargement process, especially when it could affect the Union’s internal cohesion and security.
