Ukraine is on the verge of important changes in the celebration of traditional holidays. In particular, the issue of celebrating International Women's Day, which falls on March 8, is being discussed, writes WomanEL. Will this day become a working day or will it still remain a day off?
For many Ukrainians, March 8 is a symbol of the fight for women’s rights and recognition of their contribution to society. A day to remember female strength and the difficult feminist journey. However, recently there has been debate over the need to celebrate this day at the state level due to its association with the Soviet period.

Currently, due to martial law, there is an additionalday off on March 8 not provided. This day is still popular in Ukraine, so it will be festive, but working. Note that this rule applies primarily to government institutions, while private companies can set days off at will.
Proposals to cancel March 8 and other holidays associated with the Soviet past are being actively discussed in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. A bill to amend the Labor Code of Ukraine, providing for the abolition of public holidays on March 8, May 1 and 9, is under consideration.
Instead of these holidays, deputies propose establishing Ukrainian analogues, such as Ukrainian Women's Day on February 25 (Lesya Ukrainka’s birthday), Taras Shevchenko’s birthday on March 9 and Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May.
The final decision on these changes has not yet been made and the bill is being considered by the relevant committee. Many Ukrainians are preparing for March 8, choosing gifts and tulips. Many people plan to congratulate Ukrainian heroines: military personnel, doctors, volunteers, military psychologists, etc. Previously, schools held performances and celebrations, and artists held concerts.
