A unique Pysanka coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. It has the shape of an egg, made of silver (31.82 g), and the denomination is 20 Canadian dollars, writes WomanEL.
The design was developed by Canadian artist of Ukrainian origin Tanya Mykytyuk. She has been painting Easter eggs for over 40 years. According to Tanya, the inspiration came from the recent wave of Ukrainians arriving in Canada seeking refuge and new beginnings. This is what the artist’s grandparents did after World War II.
My goal was to create a design that exudes hope, faith and resilience, drawing on the ancient symbols of Easter eggs, but with a modern aesthetic,
Tanya shared.
The container drew its color palette from nature: periwinkle is an evergreen vine with bright green leaves and purple flowers, often the first to appear in the spring. It is the periwinkle flowers and vine that can be seen on the reverse of the coin. There are also traditional motifs: diamonds, a grid and an octagonal star.
The obverse features a profile of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by portrait artist Susanna Blunt, as well as a special marking with the date of her reign.
A total of 8,500 pysanka coins were issued and quickly sold out. The proceeds will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal project, which helps Ukrainians affected by Russian aggression.
