According to the press service of the film academy, Binoche will replace Polish director Agnieszka Golland in the position. She has become the first female president of the European Film Academy since 2021, succeeding German director Wim Wenders. Prior to this, Agnieszka served as head of the board of the film academy. The director now plans to devote her time to creating new films.

Holland said she is not a person who will easily step aside, but has come to the conclusion that first and foremost she is a filmmaker. The woman has always been proud to be the President of the European Film Academy after Wim Wenders, who followed in the footsteps of Ingmar Bergman.

But for me, it’s time to step back. I couldn't have asked for a better successor. One that would represent European cinema so strongly and convincingly over the course of an amazing career. “I can wholeheartedly recommend Juliette Binoche as the new president to all members of the Academy, in the hope that she will be warmly welcomed by everyone,” said the director.

Agnieszka Holland’s latest film “Green Frontier” received the Special Jury Prize in Venice , and now she is preparing to film a biopic about Franz Kafka.

Juliette Binoche is a French actress, artist, dancer, winner of 15 film awards. She won an Oscar in 1997 for The English Patient. Juliet became the only woman to receive the award for best actress at all three major European film festivals.
