The Chernobyl accident is 38 years old: terrible figures of the tragedy

Today, April 26, is the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, which remains the greatest man-made tragedy of the 20th century. More than three decades have passed since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but its consequences still remain relevant for the world community. A large amount of radioactive dust was then released into the Earth's atmosphere, which spread to Ukraine, Belarus and even part of Europe. The cause of the accident was a poorly planned experiment and design imperfections of the station, writes WomanEL.

The reactor of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, launched in 1984, was considered the most modern at that time. However, on the night from April 25 to April 26, 1986, a powerful accident occurred that destroyed the reactor. 2 dayspeople were unaware of the explosion, continuing their daily lives.

The explosion and subsequent contamination led to the death of30 employeesof the nuclear power plant, who died as a result of the explosion or acute radiation sickness within a few months of accidents. In addition, independent experts estimate that500 thousandpeople died from radiation, and about8.5 millionresidents of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia received significant doses of radiation. The effects of radiation spread to 200 thousandsquare kilometers.

90,784 people were evacuated from the 81st settlement in Ukraine. More than600 thousandpeople became liquidators of the accident, fought the fire and cleared the rubble. In total,2.6 millionpeople in2293 cities and villagesof Ukraine were influenced by radioactive contamination.

Radiation emissions continued10 days, from April 26 to May 6, releasing millions of curies per day into the atmosphere. In total, as a result of the accident, 11 tons of nuclear fuel were released.

On the territory of the exclusion zone today there are 400 species of animals, birds and fish, as well as1200 speciesof flora where it is impossible for people to live due to high levels of radiation.

On the 38th anniversary of this terrible tragedy, the world remembers those killed and expresses solidarity and support for those affected by the consequences of the accident. The future of nuclear energy depends on the extent to which humanity has learned the lessons of Chernobyl and is ready to create the safe use of nuclear technologies. Scientists continue to study the long-term consequences of the accident in order to develop effective methods for rehabilitating contaminated areas

The exclusion zone remains an important natural reserve in which nature is restored without human intervention. At the same time, the memory of the tragedy remains in the hearts of many, recalling the responsibility for the future of the planet and national security.

By the way, we recently told you that in 2024 Ukraine will face mobilization from 20 years and a winter without electricity .
