Word of the Year 2024: Results from Dictionary.com

Each year, the Word of the Year and the shortlisted nominees capture key moments in language and culture. These words are a linguistic time capsule that reflects societal trends and global events throughout the year. This year, Dictionary.com’s 2024 Word of the Year is “demure”, reports WomanEL.

Why was “Demure” chosen as the word of the year?

To choose the 2024 Word of the Year, lexicographers analyzed a wealth of data, including headlines deserving news coverage, social media trends, search engine results, and more, to identify words that have influenced conversations online and in the real world.

In 2024, the use of the word “demure” skyrocketed. From January to the end of August, the use of the term in digital web media alone increased by almost 1,200%. This sharp increase is largely due to TikToker Jools Lebron popularizing the phrase “very modestly, very carefully” in a series of videos posted on the platform in early August.

Other popular words of the year include: “Brainrot”, “Brat”, “Extreme weather”, “Midwest nice”, “Weird”. Read more about them HERE –
