What is the Feast of the Annunciation?

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most important (twelfth) Orthodox holidays, marking the most important event in Christian history. The name of the holiday comes from the Greek “good news” and symbolizes the first joyful news for humanity after the fall of Adam and Eve.

According to the Gospel, on this day the archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary in Nazareth and told her the good news that she would become the mother of the Son of God. After some confusion and questioning the possibility of such an event, Mary submitted to the will of God, uttering the historic words: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
